Our Eco Home
Both my partner and I grew up in the WA Wheatbelt. With a temporary stint in the city to work and study we had a strong desire to return to the country to raise a family and create a self-sufficient life.
It was during my Naturopathy studies that I learnt a lot about sustainability. Being avid readers of the Earth Garden Magazine since 1990’s we had a specific ‘bucket list’ that helped us develop our property to the sustainable habitat that it is today.
We wanted to design and owner-build an eco-home made from natural materials. It had to have the smallest environmental footprint possible during the building process. Our design was to incorporate many solar passive design principles to ensure that the ongoing operational energy required would be small.
My husband and I bought our 5 acre property in North Greenbushes in 2005 when it was just paddocks with mature trees. This was the perfect blank canvas for us to begin creating our long held ‘sustainability dream’. With two small children, we set about owner building our rammed earth eco-home, always with the intention that I would run my Naturopathic Practice from within.
Each day we are cognizant to live by Mahatma Gandhi’s adage ‘be the change you wish to see in the world’.
In 2009 we moved in and have since immersed ourselves in the garden with many of the permaculture principles as our guide. We’ve planted large areas of native plants, created habitat for the local fauna, we grow an enormous amount of our own veggies, herbs, fruit, nuts and lots of garlic!
Our property demonstrates our dedication to sustainable living and hopefully will give you some ideas and leave you with some inspiration each time you visit the clinic or my website.
